Colleges Offering Tuition Guarantees In attempts to attract prospective students, many colleges across the nation are promising incoming freshmen that their tuition rates will not rise during their four years in college, according to an article in The US News World Report. All public universities in Illinois and several other public and private colleges throughout the nation are locking freshmen tuition rates. However, these schools are raising separate fees such as housing, meal plans and other various costs. Also, these colleges are increasing the tuition rates that each incoming freshmen class will pay, without changing the tuition for returning sophomores, juniors and seniors. Students and parents will save an estimated $5,000 by attending a four-year college that locks tuition, according to the article. Colleges are implementing these tuition guarantees because they are in strict competition with each other to boost enrollment. When colleges compete over students, costs tend to decrease. Students and parents still need to pay close attention to college tuition rates because most universities revenues are down due to the tough economy. Some colleges are luring freshmen in with tuition locks and guarantees; however these colleges are dramatically increasing the tuition rates for each incoming freshman class. Some of these tuition spikes are so significant that students and parents actually pay more for attending a certain college that boasts tuition guarantees. Students and parents need to closely analyze the tuition and other costs of attending college because financial administrators at colleges can skew the tuition and other costs. Universities will offer tuition guarantees and large amounts of financial aid to appear cost-effective. However, students can still overpay for college, compared to other schools. See what she had to say about her school: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Jennifer: The campus is in the middle of Tucson, which is a larger town in Arizona, but the campus has never felt unsafe in anyway! There are many things that the university does to keep its students safe, from maintaining a large campus police to having a program called SafeRide. SafeRide will drop you off at locations during the night if you feel unsafe, and it will also pick you up!Tucson's bus system is called the SunTran, and its routes are extremely extensive and will drive you to all corners of the city. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Jennifer: Every teacher and TA is required by the school to have set office hours in which students can come in and receive help. Usually, even if those hours interfere with other plans, teachers are willing to schedule extra office hours to meet up. Advisors are harder to get a hold of, as you have to make a specific appointment in advance, but they are definitely accessible. Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Jennifer: It was extremely easy for me to make friends on campus, as I was living in the dorms and became close to all of my neighbors.Greek life does play a big role in our campus, with about 30% of students being in Greek life. However, it is certainly not necessary to be involved in Greek life. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Jennifer: The most important thing we have on campus is called the Think Tank.It supports students with student-to-student tutoring, and it has really helped me through tough times in some of my classes! It's also cool because many teachers hold their office hours in the Think Tank, so you can get help from them there, too. As for recruiting opportunities, the university holds job fairs at least twice a semester. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Jennifer: I love the libraries we have on campus! The most popular libraries we have are the Main Library and the Science Engineering Library, but we also have a Medical Library and an Art/Music Library. They are all very spacious, even though they definitely tend to get crowded around finals time. My favorite part about the libraries is getting my own individual study room; it allows me to concentrate better! VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Jennifer: Tucson is a medium-sized town with a lot of random things to do. I would say that in general, students tend to stay around campus, just because there are more student-oriented things to do. University Street and Fourth Avenue are big hang out spots, as they have restaurants, bookstores, clothing stores, and more. The downtown area isn't real big in Tucson, but they are attempting to renovate it, and soon enough, a streetcar will run from the university to downtown. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Jennifer: The university is quite large, with over 30,000 students.I knew this going into college, and it was what I wanted! It gives you an opportunity to meet a lot of new people. Some of the classes tend to be large, but you can definitely find many that are 20-30 students, especially Language courses. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Jennifer: One of my most memorable teachers was for Calculus 1.I had a graduate student teacher, named George! He was pretty much the most amazing math teacher ever, especially because I am a terrible math student.I constantly went in for help in his office hours, and I finally was able to progress, and advance at the end of the semester! An internship! Internships help students learn more about industries or fields of interest, meet professionals to whom they can turn as mentors in the future and most importantly, gain real world experience. Here are five tips on where to start as you and your high school student look for internship opportunities: 1. Start at the guidance counselor's office The high school guidance counselor's office is a great place to begin the search for internships, as it may have a current listing of opportunities and programs available in the area for students. 2. Check out organizations' headquarters Headquarters of large corporations often have summer internship programs for high school students. If you have relatives in a major metropolitan area with whom your teen could stay for a summer, consider exploring companies outside of your hometown. In Menlo Park, California, Facebook offers a summer high school internship program. In Washington, D.C., there are internship programs at organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institutes of Health and the Library of Congress, to name a few. In San Francisco, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission has a high school internship program for students interested in the field of transportation. 3. Explore companies and organi zations in your area. What companies are in your town or city? Look at their websites to see if they list internships. If companies that interest your teen don't seem to have anything formal in place, they still might consider hiring a hard working student who wants to learn their business. If your teen is interested in a particular field or type of company, encourage him or her to send out cover letters and resumes to a top 10 list of organizations. Many companies respond positively to students who take such initiative, and even if they don't have a posted position, they might create one for an eager student who takes initiative. 4. Check out colleges. Community colleges and four-year colleges and universities are great places to look for internships. Stanford's School of Earth Sciences has a number of different summer internship programs for high school students. Pennsylvania State University offers many different summer programs. The University of Texas Health Science Center Sa n Antonio's summer program exposes high school students interested in health careers to medical and biomedical research. Rutgers University's New Jersey Medical School has a high school intern research exposure program. Explore the colleges in your state for programs for high school students. 5. Look for volunteer opportunities. If your teen strikes out in his or her search for internships, an alternate route could be to volunteer. Many organizations that don't have the budget to pay interns might still be willing to take on an unpaid intern or volunteer for a few hours a week. A company may have your teen start out shadowing some of its employees, but the exposure to the industry and individuals' roles within it will be valuable no matter what. With college admissions becoming more competitive, internships can help high school students set themselves apart from their peers.
